1. What is a SFgate-based Form?

SFgate-based forms are HTML documents that enable to use structured fields features of freeWAIS-sf via WWW interface.
There are different kinds of SFgate-based forms: the appearance of three of them is reported below. Their specific features will be described in next chapters.
Most of these forms are LIVE: if you select their Start Search button, then you have back record(s) matching your query.

A. Forms with tags based on freeWAIS-sf fields

This is the simplest kind of form.
In this case you find some Input Boxes referred with labels that could be the name of the fields they have in freeWAIS-sf .fmt file or with more descriptive terms.
If there are two or more Input Boxes, then they are connected in explicit or in hidden way with boolean operators AND or OR.
In the example below, the boolean operators are explicit and you can choose which one to use.

B. Forms with field selection at the running time

In this case each Input Box has one or more input tags so that the user can choose at the running time on which field (s)he wants to search for.
In the example below there are two tags. Each of them has a field selection with three possible choices:

• Surname
• Name
• Department

Please note that this way you can also search twice on the same field. In this specific case (phonebook) you have to connect Input Boxes with the Boolean Operator OR, of course!

C. Forms based on "checkbox" tags

This is another example of SFgate-based form. This kind of form can be used in all the cases in which the content of the searchable fields has a limited number of possibilities. In this kind of forms, if one selects more than a choice, an implicit boolean operator OR connects selected values inside that field.
